MOUNTAIN OCHLOS
In Mountain Ochlos we encounter two hybrid creatures, a pair of demigods, giving a lecture on democratic values. Or at least, that was the ambition.
Instead, we witness two artists – two lost souls on the road through Europe in a constant movement between appearance and disappearance, in an attempt to make sense of it all. From Munich to Athens, they encounter weeping diplomats, radical artists, centaurs, satyrs and other hybrid beings, drifting between tourist sites, security conferences and art residencies. Luckily, they find a way over the fence to an iconic hill with the ruins of a temple where everything is said to have begun. At least, that’s what we were told at school. But where does it end? Where does democracy stops—and who decides that? And Europe?
In a desperate attempt to hold on to what remains of the old world as they know it, a mythical Démos emerges from the fog – a collective body that seems to have all the answers and decides everything.
Like present-day Europe, Mountain Ochlos is hard to define. It is partly a participatory lecture, a summit of Démos, partly a choreographic attempt to speak through awkward movements, and partly a mockumentary of today’s democratic imagination.
